Santiago de Cuba

On our way to shoot video of the Ballet Folklórico Cutumba in Santiago de Cuba, guided by their drummer Yoanis, son of my stateside rumba teacher, Jose Carrión, a former principal dancer and choreographer with the ballet. The primal connection between drumming and dancing is very much alive in Cuba, in practices such as the Santería rituals to honor the Orichás, the African spirits who made their way to the Americas during the Atlantic slave trade.
