Jazz

Women in Africa, as everywhere, work hard. This one, Bert, was working full-time and then some in a small café in Saint-Louis, Senegal, where I met her while photographing their annual jazz festival, the most important in Africa and one with deep Cuban roots. Bert’s iconic face, full of character and grace, is a portrait photographer’s dream, so in spite of my language shortcomings (I don’t speak Wolof), her job’s demands, the crowds and heat and dust, we were able to find time to become friends and forge a creative collaboration.
